HANOVER, Ind. - The Hanover College Women’s Soccer team will look to close out its 4 game home stand with a win as they host Thomas More (Ky.) at 5 p.m. this Wednesday, September 13.
In their most recent contest against Augustana (Ill.), the Panthers struck first when sophomore Maisyn Garland (Rochester, Ill.) scored her second goal of the season at 35:14. Hanover gained more momentum early in the second half with a goal from junior Claire Stockwell (Burlington, Ky.) scored at 64:42.
Augustana responded quickly, however, and cut their deficit to 2-1 at 66:57. Any momentum they had gained quickly vanished when freshman Sydney Mattingly (Louisville, Ky.) opportunely scored her first career goal at 71:47. The Panthers held their ground for the remainder of the half and sunk Augustana 3-1.
In the opening contest of this past weekend, Garland logged the only goal in Hanover’s 1-0 home victory over Wittenberg.
For the season, Garland has a team high four points, while junior Cassidy Evanson (Carmel, Ind.) also has four total points, including one goal and two assists. Overall, seven different players for HC have scored a goal this season.
The Panthers’ opponent, Thomas More, who is currently receiving votes in United Soccer Coaches National Poll, sits at 3-1 on the season. In their most recent contest against Augustana, the Saints came out victorious, 2-0, with the help of a goal from Olivia Nienaber, who leads the squad with two season scores.
When these two teams faced off last season, Hanover came out of the gates quickly and scored at 7:27. However, they allowed Thomas More two unanswered goals and the Panthers were defeated 2-1.
Hanover will also travel to Sewanee (Tenn.) this weekend for a 1 p.m. game, Sunday, Sept. 17. Sewanee will host two home matches before welcoming Hanover this weekend and currently holds a 0-3-1 record. The Panthers defeated the Tigers last fall with a 3-2 decision in overtime.
