“Parker ‘Pep’ Panther” – Hanover’s new “ambassador of enthusiasm” – ready for fall debut

Athletic and social events will be more colorful this fall with the introduction of Hanover’s new mascot.
The vibrant “super fan” – dubbed “Parker ‘Pep’ Panther” – was created as an active component of the College’s rebranding, which started four years ago with the introduction of new primary and secondary logos. The dynamic mascot will make appearances at games and campus activities, serving as an engaging, fun-loving representative of Hanover’s athletic teams and school spirit.
“We’re excited to continue building on the Hanover brand by designing and creating a custom mascot,” said Peter Ashley, Hanover’s vice president for enrollment and marketing. “A fun, engaging ‘live’ mascot is an important part of campus life and we can’t wait for people to meet the Panther.”
Designed by Payton Lock ’27, the multi-colored character was crafted to connect with people of all ages. Lock’s creation brings to life the athletic department’s popular secondary logo, which features an aggressive, ready-to-pounce panther.

The design incorporates the full palette of school colors – particularly shades of red and blue – with additional subtle elements including wristbands and socks, touches of the traditional red, white and blue striping as seen on Hanover uniforms through the decades, and the primary athletic logo on the chest.
“The most challenging parts of the project were getting proportions right while maintaining the cartoon style,” said Lock. “My favorite part of the mascot has to be the light blue features. It makes the appearance pop and brings a sense of excitement and energy.”
Lock began conceptualization last winter, working in consultation with Joe Lackner, Hanover’s director of digital marketing, and Matt Maupin, director of creative services. After initial design, a series of modifications and reviews with staff members, the project was completed in April.
“When I saw my redesign of the mascot come to life it was riveting,” exclaimed Lock. “To see my efforts and passion in life-sized form felt unreal.”
