Duke Energy Foundation grant aids engineering academy
The Duke Energy Foundation has continued its partnership with Hanover College’s summer engineering program with a $5,000 grant to support the unique residential program for high school students with interests in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Hanover’s “Exploring Engineering Summer Academy” offers students in grades 9-12 an opportunity to explore STEM-related fields. The College’s engineering academy provides an engaging week-long immersion into a range of STEM fields.
Hanover College Summer Academy
The Duke Energy Foundation has aided the academy in a variety of ways, including providing full-tuition scholarships to students from the local service area, funding the cost of a local high school STEM teacher to participate in the program and the purchase of educational materials and computer equipment.
This year’s grant will fund an attendance scholarship for one student from each of Indiana’s Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties, plus a stipend to Kelly Neal, Madison Consolidated (Ind.) High School’s Cub Industries’ engineering instructor, who will serve as an adjunct instructor, and the purchase of educational supplies for all students (including an Arduino micro-controller electronics kit to take home).
This year’s edition of “Exploring Engineering Summer Academy” will be held from June 8-13. The high school students will live on Hanover’s campus, participate in science experiments and in-depth engineering sessions throughout the week, and tour the Clifty Creek Power Plant and SuperATV in Madison, Ind. Members of the College’s faculty, along with Neal, will teach all courses. Additional extra-curricular activities, with many led by current Hanover STEM students, will explore college life and present opportunities for socialization with like-minded peers. The week will culminate with presentations by students, demonstrating what was learned during the academy.
