MLK commemoration to feature volunteer activities and community conversations

Hanover College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 20, and offer a collection of volunteer activities and community-building conversations throughout the week. Participation is free for all events. For more information or to participate, contact Constance Pope, director of multicultural and international student affairs.

Monday, Jan. 20
Jefferson County (Ind.) House of Hope
9-11 a.m., 100 East Second Street, Suite H, Madison, IN 47250
Sort food items and prepare the pantry to serve those in need.

Campus Environmental Service Project
Noon-1 p.m., Lynn Hall, Hanover College Campus
Help organize the Hanover College Free Store.

Tuesday, Jan. 21
Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson County
4-6 p.m., 551 M.S.H. Northgate Road, Madison, IN 47250
Read stories, conduct art projects and play games with children of various age groups.

Wednesday, Jan. 22
La Casa Amiga
4-5:30 p.m., Eggleston Community Building, 419 East Street, Madison, IN 47250
Help local Spanish-speaking children with reading, math and writing skills.

Thursday, Jan. 23
“MLK community conversation with Stachelle Bussey”
7 p.m., Fitzgibbon Recital Hall, Lynn Center for Fine Arts, Hanover College Campus
Bussey is the founder and executive director of The Hope Buss and activist-in-residence for Hanover’s Social Justice Leadership Program.

Friday, Jan. 24
“Meditation on King’s Principles of Nonviolence”
Noon, Haq Center for Cross-Cultural Education, J. Graham Brown Campus Center, Hanover College Campus
Hanover’s Ball Family Chaplain, Rev. Catherine Knott, Ph.D., will guide a reflection on King’s principles of nonviolence.

The College’s MLK Day activities are sponsored by the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs, Haq Center for Cross-Cultural Education, Social Justice Leadership Program, Black Student Union and Latino Student Union, along with the Equity, Inclusion and Multicultural Education Committee and Racial Justice and Equity Committee.
