Seniors Brian Gunter (Louisville, Ky.) and Emily Boyd (Indianapolis, Ind.) have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s athletes of the week in their respective sports.
Gunter earned the HCAC’s men’s basketball player-of-the-week honor after leading Hanover to a pair of league wins last week. He averaged 25.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two contests and set career scoring highs in each of the games.
He scored a career-best 19 points and added six rebounds to help the Panthers defeat Anderson University, 89-66, on the road Jan. 16. He followed with a career-high 31 points and seven boards in an 84-74 home triumph against Defiance College (Ohio), Jan. 20.
In the two games, Gunter shot 70.3 percent from the floor (19-of-27), including a 12-of-15 performance against Defiance. He was 5-of-8 from three-point range and hit 7-of-8 free throw attempts.
Boyd was named the Heartland Conference’s women’s indoor field athlete of the week after her performance in the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Friday Night Invitational, Jan. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
In the season-opening meet, Boyd set Hanover’s indoor weight throw record to lead the Panthers to a first-place finish in the meet.
Boyd captured first place in the event, setting the school mark with an effort of 14.11 meters (46-feet, 3.5-inches). She increased the record by more than half a meter and her effort traveled more than one meter farther than any other HCAC athlete in the meet.
Boyd also added to the Panthers’ point total with an eighth-place finish in the shot put (9.35 meters).
Hanover's women's squad totaled 138.5 points to win the meet’s team crown. Carroll College (Wis.) was second with 122 points, while Manchester University finished third with 105.
