Duke Energy Foundation continues support of summer engineering program
The Duke Energy Foundation has provided a $5,000 grant to support Hanover College’s summer engineering program for area high school students.

Hanover’s “Exploring Engineering Summer Academy” offers high school students with interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) an opportunity to explore related fields. The College’s residential engineering academy provides a unique, week-long immersion into a range of STEM fields with a special focus on solar energy.
More about Hanover College’s Summer Academy
For the past two years, the Duke Energy Foundation has aided the academy in a variety of ways, including the purchase of educational materials and computer equipment, funding the cost of a local high school STEM teacher to participate in the program and even providing full-tuition scholarships to students from the local service area. The $5,000 grant will provide educational supplies for all students (including an Arduino micro-controller electronics kit to take home), a stipend to Matt Longville, Southwestern (Ind.) High School’s tech-education teacher, who will serve as an adjunct instructor, and $1,000 to Southwestern for the purchase of classroom equipment for its pre-engineering program.

This year’s edition of “Exploring Engineering Summer Academy” will be held from June 9-14. The high school students will live on Hanover’s campus, participate in science experiments and in-depth engineering sessions, and also tour the Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corp.’s Clifty Creek Power Plant. Members of the College’s faculty and Longville will teach all courses. Additional extra-curricular activities, with many led by current Hanover STEM students, will explore college life and present opportunities for socialization with like-minded peers.
The Duke Energy Foundation’s support also provides a pre-session orientation and post-program celebration. The welcoming session with parents will provide tips on methods to support children for continued excellence in high school. The end-of-week celebration will salute students for their academy accomplishments and encourage the on-going pursuit of a STEM field. A member of the College’s admission staff will also be available to answer Hanover-specific questions and general next-steps-toward-college questions.
