Samuel Colby OTD ’25
Occupational Therapy Student
What drew you to Hanover College?
The two-year hybrid approach was incredibly appealing. Although accelerated, I saw the opportunity to earn a Doctorate in Occupational Therapy in as little as two years as an invaluable advantage. Additionally, I was impressed by Hanover’s commitment to academic excellence, particularly the merit-based scholarships awarded to students for maintaining strong academic performance. Attending a school that recognizes and rewards academic achievement was an important factor in my decision.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re in town for labs?
One of the most memorable aspects of being on campus for labs was the opportunity to room and study with a great friend I met in the program, Edgar Reta. This experience provided a change of environment, allowing me to immerse myself in hands-on learning while building meaningful connections. Although the labs were rigorous and demanding, the camaraderie among nearly 60 other students facing the same challenges made the experience both motivating and rewarding.
What’s something you’re excited for in the future?
As a military veteran, my long-term goal has always been to work within the Veterans Affairs system, using occupational therapy to serve fellow service members. During my interview with Hanover, I made sure to express my aspirations, and I was encouraged by the fact that faculty members had professional connections within the VA. This reaffirmed my confidence that Hanover would help prepare me for the career path I am passionate about.
What has been the most valuable aspect of this program to you?
The greatest value of this program is the time efficiency. Completing a doctorate in two years instead of three allows me to gain a year of clinical experience while others are still in school. Since many positions require at least a year of clinical experience, I see this as a major advantage, helping me advance my career earlier than a traditional three-year program would allow.
What advice do you have for people considering this program?
I would emphasize that while this program is incredibly rigorous, it is also exceptionally rewarding. I have learned more in this program than in any other graduate program I have completed. Success in this program requires dedication, organization, and a strong work ethic. If you are prepared to commit to the workload and stay disciplined, this program will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the field of occupational therapy.
What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
My family—my wife and son—live full-time in a motorhome, and during my first year in the program, I studied primarily out of my car, which became my makeshift office. Despite facing an emergency move from Arizona to Texas over the summer and several other challenges, I was able to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Through faith, perseverance, and the unwavering support of my family, I successfully navigated my first year of this demanding program.
