Saul Lemerond
Associate Professor of English
What drew you to Hanover College?
The small class sizes. I had the opportunity to teach at two large state schools before I came to Hanover, and it is very difficult to overstate the value of small class sizes. It makes me more effective as a professor, and it’s far, far better for the students because they’re able to get a good deal more attention. When I taught at larger universities, I often had classes of more than fifty students. That’s over four times as many students in the average class here at Hanover. Being good at my job is important to me, and small class sizes make it much easier for me to be good at my job.
What advice do you have for current students?
I would say that the best advice I could give is that; instead of looking at college as an obstacle that you need to overcome, embrace this time in your life. It has so much to offer.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is The Point, hands down. I’ve been working here for going on six years, and it never ceases to cause me to pause. It’s beautiful. It really is, and it makes me feel lucky that I get to work here.
What is something your students would be surprised to learn about you?
I tell my students most of these things, so I doubt they’d be particularly surprised, but I’m an excellent dancer and I used to be an underground techno DJ. Yes, these two things are connected. Yes, I have been known to dance for my students when they’ve asked me to.
